The writing of art histories, including those of Québec and Canada, is generally informed by significant works of art that come to matter to a given collective psyche because of their relevance and, especially, their depth. WORLDLINE (1969-1971) – dont All over la planète accompagne la réédition, quarante-six ans plus tard, du livre publié par Bill Vazan – appartient à cette catégorie d’œuvre emblématique de notre histoire culturelle. Ce livre est devenu le témoin précieux d’un happening mondial qui – faisant usage de technologies nouvelles en science géomatique et mettant en œuvre un événement dans vingt-cinq institutions muséales situées partout autour du globe –, rend manifeste la lucidité et l’ambition de Bill Vazan. Le présent ouvrage, comprenant des essais de Marie J. Jean, de Robert Graham et de Zoë Tousignant, contextualise ce projet d’envergure dans la pratique de l’artiste, incluant une section sur ses projets land art, dans un parcours nous faisant voyager du local vers le global.

WORLDLINE a été mise en œuvre simultanément le 5 mars 1971, en donnant lieu à une ligne virtuelle mondiale dont les segments visibles étaient installés dans vingt-cinq institutions artistiques de l’Australie, du Brésil, du Canada, du Danemark, de la France, des États-Unis, de la Finlande, d’Islande, du Nigeria, du Sierra Leone, de la Yougoslavie, etc. La participation de ces institutions, chacune formant un des relais de la ligne mondiale, constituait l’œuvre en soi. Cette réalisation d’une extrême complexité pour l’époque a nécessité la contribution d’un ingénieur qui, avec l’aide d’un ordinateur, a évalué l’orientation des lignes de manière à tenir compte de la rotondité de la Terre. Cette publication documente toutes les étapes de la réalisation de ce projet – dont l’élaboration a duré trois ans –, incluant la correspondance, les calculs géodésiques et les images des différents lieux participants.
WORLDLINE was implemented simultaneously on March 5, 1971, creating a virtual line around the globe with visible segments laid down in twenty-five art institutions in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Finland, Iceland, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the United States, Yugoslavia, and other countries. These institutions’ participation, each constituting one waystation along the Worldline, was the work in itself. The achievement, exceedingly complex at the time, required the contribution of an engineer who, using a computer, calculated the precise position of each line segment, taking into account the curvature of the Earth. This publication documents every step in the production of this undertaking—a process that took three years—and includes the artist’s correspondence, the geodesic calculations, and images of the various participating sites.
